Interested in what’s going on in the district? By appointment, Kembu can organize seperate trips around Kenana Farm, Expressions Flower Farm, or to the Gone Fishing fly-tying factory. These Farm Tours are highly informative guided visits suitable for people with a keen interest in each business. Packages would usually include an introductory lecture over morning tea or coffee, lunch provided by Kembu and a tour of the establishment, finishing with a Q&A session over afternoon tea.
Kenana Farm Tour
Kenana farm is one of Kenya’s leading breeders of Fresian dairy cows, Kenya’s leading Race Horse Stud, and home to a healthy rotation of crops. The farm are self sufficient with timber and wood with their own eucalyptus forests. To help counter unemployment in the district the farm also provides a home for the highly successful Kenana Knitters womens group.
Expressions Rose Farm
The fresh cut flower industry in Kenya accounts for a huge amount of foreign exchange into Kenya’s economy, and creates a huge number of jobs up country in the highlands. The low humidity high altitude equatorial climate provides an ideal environment in which to grow flowers commercially in an extremely competitive industry. Licensed varieties of flowers are grown to order, picked, plucked and prepared for export on a daily basis. They are chilled down to under 3°C transported to Nairobi, where several jumbo loads of fresh cut produce are flown to Europe EVERY NIGHT! An amazing hive of work with a regimented production process to get ones head around.
Gone Fishing Fly Tying Factory
Did you know that the majority of fishing flies in the world are hand tied here in Kenya. Johnny Onslow, a fanatical fly fisher himself, set up a cottage industry to help support handicapped members of the community in Rongai to secure gainful employment. Fly tying is a highly skilled art that takes dedicated attention to detail. Individual tyers create fascinating imitations of insects and other patterns that might persuade a wily fish to bite – or more importantly a happy angler to buy. Gone Fishing produce hundreds of thousands of dozens of flies each year for mail order companies, retail outlets, as well as tying bespoke patterns for specialist guides around the world. Very interesting to vist.
